well of the many things i know about car audio, building fiberglass enclosures are not one i know alot about....in about 6-8 months im going to be getting a new car and im not sure what kind yet but im going to want to build a fiberglass enslosure in the trunk and im thinking about making an enslosure for 2 jl w7's and an amp rack....not sure about what kind of amp yet....but im wanting to see if anyone can give me a little bit of detailed instructions on how to build them....i have checked out zane's tech site on the subject and it is helpfull but its for building into the tire well....im thinking about on the sides of the trunk....the main issue i think i'd have is getting the stuff to keep form....i hear w/ the resin on it has the consistancy of fresh pasta noodles....but im not a hundred percent sure about it....also i was looking at maybe getting some eclipse ti's but i beleive they might be out of my price range...im not too sure about how much the JL's are....and if anyone else has any other good sq subs w/ moderate spl for about $200 or < let me know....but any advise would be helpfull....thanks.....

Fiberglass is tough to work with- there is no denying that... What I usually find useful is to apply just the resin to the surface firstly and apply enough of it to allow a slight excess. After this- use 6" strips of the fiberglass matt cut to the necessary length; and delicately apply them, overlapping about an inch at the seams. Just apply the matt so that it sticks and absorbes the resin behind it. After this has cured, repeat this process. By about the 2nd or 3rd layer, you should be able to carefully remove the fiberglass mold from the car. It should at this time have enough strength to maintain its shape, however, you will need to apply several more layers of glass to this mold to make sure its integrity holds up under the demands of a subwoofer enclosure. As for the SQ subs with a hint of SPL, he he what can I say, try the Alumapro Alchemy's. I am of course, a bit biased towards them, however, I am sure they will impress you as much as they have impressed me thus far. take it easy, [glow=blue,2,300]-zane[/glow][/i][/size]

thanks man...also i was wondering if you have gotten my e-mail about the admin. thing...drop me a line at Goddyd4me@hotmail.com peace out...also when i get my car i'll probably be getting back w/ you more about the fiberglass box...i was thinking of making the box on the sides angling toward the front of the car on the opp side like left rear facing front right and making an amp rack on top of each box... and puting a plexiglas window on each box w/ a black light inside ....w/ those Alumapro Alchemy's i think that would look sweet since they are white....heh...i was also thinking about trying to make like a custom made ice chest in the trunk....i think that would look sweet....and be a nice thing to have in your trunk...heh....but im sure i'll be getting you a lot more questions after i get the car....and once again thanks for the advise...

not for sure how well this will work,but....................
my father-in-law is a old bodyman. one of the tricks he used in fiberglass, with weird shapes, is to cut out a pattern and mold the fiberglass around it. you grease or otherwise slick up the mold, apply your 'glass and when the shape sets, you just pull out the mold.

if you can get it to hold it shape, i don't see why not. it's possible that you could 'glass over both sides of the wire and use it for strength. that comes straight from my pop-in-law.

i was thinking of molding the chicken wire into shape and then putting one layer on and letting it dry completely before moving to the next....figure that'll add a little more strength while i apply the next layers....think it'll work?

A little different of an idea, however, it should work. Just remember to remove the wire after you have a solid fiberglass shell to avoid any possible magnetic interference. One other method to consider is using speaker grille cloth stretched over your project. You can fiberglass right over it, and leave it there for strength afterwards. I have also heard of several installers using clay to mold the kicks and then cover the mold with fiberglass so that the exact shape is conveyed. That may take a little more work, but it also appears to have some advantages....

zane..good catch on the magnetic interference w/ chicken wire. did'nt even think about it,my bad.
about the clay, pop says that is a sweet idea for those really weird shapes or for someone breakin in to 'glass. helps to eliminate sags and such in the 'glass. just don't forget to use something to help the 'glass come off without issues!

i guess i'll just use wax paper or aluminum foil to overlay the chicken wire....other than that i think it should work....any other idea's of what i could do? like idea's of what to do w/ a designe...im probably gonna get another toyota truck...for some reason i love my old toyota even though im a large guy and its a little small for me...i think im gonna try to get an exended cab...probably gonna be about 3 or 4 months instead of my original figure of 6...anyways....let me know if u got an idea...thanks

When I did mine I lined the area of the enclosure with some aluminum foil to hold the shape better and then used to seran-wrap, you know, the stuff you rap your sandwhiches in and then applied a one to two layer and then took it out to finish. As far as the SQPL subs, I love my Adire Audio Shiva, could not be happier with it. I plan to take out my back wall and rear kick pannels to make room for two Maelstroms or Brahamas. Cha Cha Cha.
